Garden Night Market, Tainan’s biggest, does not open every night, and most English guides have its schedule wrong. Since October 2025 it runs Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 5pm to midnight, on its big lot on Hai’an Road in the North District (closed Monday to Wednesday). The Friday session is new; the old “Thu/Sat/Sun” advice is stale. Miss it and Tainan’s other markets rotate to cover most nights. It’s a taxi ride from the center, and rain effectively cancels it.
Tainan does night markets differently. Instead of permanent nightly streets, its big markets are carnival-style lots that open on set days of the week, and knowing the rotation is the entire game. Garden (花園夜市, also translated Flower Night Market) is the flagship: around 400 stalls of food, games and shopping that materialize on an open lot four evenings a week and vanish by morning.

- Getting there: no rail nearby; a taxi from the Tainan TRA station area takes 10-15 minutes and is the dependable route. City bus 0-Left has historically detoured to the market on weekend evenings, but treat the bus as a bonus, not a plan.
- Weather: the lot is open-air with minimal cover. Steady rain shuts the evening down in practice; on a wet night, eat in Tainan’s city center instead.
The Tainan rotation
Locals memorized the old schedule as a seven-character rhyme (大大武花大武花), and the first thing to know is that the rhyme is out of date now that Friday became a multi-market night. The current weekly board:

Dadong (大東) near the East District is the solid mid-week fallback, and Wusheng (武聖) is the smaller old-school one. Whichever you land on, schedules shift occasionally; a quick look at the market’s social page on the day is the Tainan habit.
What to eat at Garden
Garden’s lineup skews classic southern street food. The stalls with standing queues: Er Shi Xiong braised snacks (二師兄古早味滷味) for old-style lu wei, Tongda charcoal chicken cutlet (統大碳烤香雞排) for the grilled-then-fried cutlet that beats most fried-only versions, and Chen Da Min mala duck blood (陳大民麻辣鴨血) for the spicy end. For dessert, this is the right city for white sugar mochi (白糖粿), the fried glutinous rice dusted in sugar that Tainan claims as its own, plus candied sweet potato from Dong Dong (東東拔絲地瓜).
Prices sit below Taipei levels, NT$40-80 for most items, cash strongly preferred. Games rows (shrimp fishing, balloon darts, mahjong bingo) take up a real share of the lot, and they’re half the fun of the carnival format.
Fitting it into a Tainan visit
Tainan’s best eating is its daytime small restaurants, so don’t starve yourself all day for the market. The pattern that works: early dinner of beef soup or eel noodles in the old city, then Garden from 7pm for snacks, games and dessert. If your Tainan nights are Monday to Wednesday, use the rotation table and adjust expectations; the fallback markets are smaller and more local, which some travelers end up preferring anyway.
