Taichung works best as a base with excursions, not a sight-collecting city. One city day covers Miyahara, the Calligraphy Greenway and the theater district before a Gaomei Wetlands sunset (check the tide window first). Fengjia night market fills the evening, and the 6670 bus from Gancheng station makes Taichung the natural Sun Moon Lake base. Two things the old blogs get wrong: Rainbow Village is a repainted recreation now, and the MRT is one line that skips the train station and Fengjia.

Taiwan’s second-largest city is sunny, spread out and short on marquee monuments, which reads as a weakness until you use it correctly: sleep and eat here cheaply, do one good city day, and let Taichung’s position launch you at the coast and the mountains. The HSR from Taipei takes about an hour (NT$700).

Getting around: know the MRT’s limits

Taichung’s MRT is a single green line linking the HSR station to the city-hall corridor. It does not reach Taichung TRA station, Miyahara or Fengjia, so buses (EasyCard, frequent, cheap) and Uber do the real work, with iBike docks filling gaps. A rental car earns its keep only for combining the outskirts (Gaomei plus the Xinshe hills); the core never needs one.

The city day

Start at Miyahara by the train station: a 1927 ophthalmology clinic rebuilt as a Harry-Potter-library dessert hall, open daily 10:00-21:00, where the queue is for the ice cream and the toppings counter. Walk or bus west to the Calligraphy Greenway corridor: Shenji New Village, a retro government-housing block turned craft-and-coffee cluster (stalls liveliest afternoons and weekends), leads toward the National Taichung Theater, Toyo Ito’s cave-like landmark, free to wander, closed Mondays. Bubble-tea pilgrims can detour to Chun Shui Tang’s original store on Siwei Street, where pearl milk tea was born in the 1980s; expect a wait at meal times.

Rainbow Village needs the update most guides skip: the original murals, painted over decades by veteran “Grandpa” Huang Yung-fu, were destroyed in a 2022 vandalism incident, Huang died in early 2024, and the village reopened in 2024 repainted as a recreation with new designs. It’s free and photogenic, but it’s a 15-30 minute stop and no longer the folk-art original; go if it’s on your way, not across town.

Gaomei Wetlands: the tide is the itinerary

Taichung’s best sight is the sunset over Gaomei’s wind turbines from the boardwalk into the mudflats. The logistics are everything: the boardwalk opens 08:00-18:00 but closes for roughly 1.5-2 hours around each high tide, and the magic window is the 1-2 hours before sunset at lower tide, so check the tide table on the official Gaomei site before committing the evening. Bus 309 from Taichung TRA station takes 70-90 minutes and doesn’t run often; confirm your return departure on arrival or budget a taxi back. When the window and the weather line up, it’s one of Taiwan’s great evenings.

The Sun Moon Lake base play

This is Taichung’s ace. Nantou Bus 6670 leaves from Gancheng station (near the TRA station; board at the origin to get a seat, especially weekends), roughly every 30 minutes from 07:20 to about 19:45, reaching the lake in 1.5-2 hours; a round trip runs NT$360, and Sun Moon Lake Pass bundles (bus, boat, ropeway) are sold at the Gancheng counter. Where to stay and eat

The TRA station area wins for most travelers: cheapest beds, Miyahara walkable, and the Gaomei and Sun Moon Lake buses leave from its doorstep. Xitun/Feng Chia puts the night market at your feet at the cost of bus rides to everything else, and the theater district around the green line suits an upscale, newer-Taichung stay. Evenings belong to Fengjia, Taiwan’s biggest night market and its snack laboratory.
