Station lockers: the workhorse
Electronic lockers cluster at every Taipei MRT station of any size, all HSR stations, and TRA stations down to surprisingly small towns. Pricing runs by size and time, typically NT$20-70 per 3-hour block, paid by coins or EasyCard at the newer banks. Most take standard carry-ons; the large doors swallow a big suitcase. Two practical notes: photograph your locker number and the station exit beside it (the classic failure is forgetting which entrance), and note that lockers at day-trip hubs (Taipei Main, Jiantan, Ruifang) run out by late morning on weekends.
For bags that don’t fit or stays past a day, staffed left-luggage counters at major TRA/HSR stations (Taipei Main’s is the busiest) charge flat per-day rates per piece and accept the oversized and the awkward. They keep station hours, so check closing time against your return train.
The airport, and multi-day stashing
Taoyuan’s terminals run staffed baggage-storage counters with per-day pricing, the clean solution for the classic east-coast problem: flying out of Taipei but not wanting to drag a big case to Hualien and Taitung. Store the suitcase at the airport or at Taipei Main’s counter, travel the east with a backpack, and collect on the way out. Hotels extend the same logic: holding bags on checkout day is universal and free, and many Taipei hotels will hold luggage for the length of a side trip if you’re returning for another night, which is worth asking about at check-in.
Day-trip locker strategy
- Jiufen/Pingxi day with luggage: lockers at Ruifang station bridge the gap; stash there, do Jiufen and the Pingxi line light, collect before the train onward to Hualien.
- Checkout-day city hours: hotel hold beats lockers on price (free) and size limits.
- HSR same-day hops: lockers at both ends make a luggage-free Tainan or Taichung day trivial.
- Airport early arrival / late flight: the terminal counters, plus the in-town check-in service at Taipei Main for eligible airlines, which takes the bag off your hands hours early.
What Taiwan doesn’t really have is Japan’s ship-your-suitcase takkyubin culture for tourists; same-day hotel-to-hotel forwarding exists but is niche and Chinese-language. The locker-and-counter network is the system, and it’s enough.
